Marvelous Market: Best Comics to Buy April 10

Hello, and welcome to the Marvelous Market. If this is your first time here, welcome. This is the log of comics I, Spike Stonehand, the world’s greatest comic critic, am buying this week. Are you considering buying a new comic book for the first time? It can be overwhelming to know what, out of so many options, is worth buying. Have no fear, and follow my lead.

Ultimate X-Men # 2

Ultimate X-Men 1 was everything I could have hoped for. I am honestly a little astonished at what Peach Momoko was able to publish in an official Marvel comic. Not because the content was edgy or graphic, but because it didn’t feel like any Marvel comic I’ve read. This is one potential future of Big 2 comics being created right in front of us. Don’t miss issue 2.

Transformers # 7

Daniel Warren Johnson is still writing this, but Jorge Corona has taken over on art duties. This is a potential jumping on point, as the start of the second arc. While I am skeptical anyone can capture Johnson’s raw dynamism, Corona seems to bring a clean line to his robots that I am more than willing to try out.

Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees # 5

Looking to dive into a new series? Here are some new titles starting this week, alongside their basic premise, that you should check out.

Uncanny Valley # 1

When the Blood Dries # 1

The Enfield Gang Massacre vol. 1

A Western that is as haunting as it is thrilling, THE ENFIELD GANG MASSACRE tells the dark origin of THAT TEXAS BLOOD’s Ambrose County as only Jacob Phillips and Chris Condon can!Montgomery Enfield and his gang of outlaws find themselves in the crosshairs of an aging Texas Ranger and a newborn county that’s hungry for law – by any means necessary.

The Sixth Gun omnibus vol. 1

In the passing shadow of the Civil War, defiant Confederate general Oliander Hume waits to be freed, too evil and warped to die, too mad with bloodlust to surrender his black magic. He hungers for his lost and most precious possession, an ancient weapon of foreboding doom. But the last and most powerful of six magical revolvers-and the key to unlocking unstoppable power-has fallen into the hands of an innocent girl, Becky Montcrief. The gunslinger at her side, Drake Sinclair, is no white knight and is himself on the hunt for the six legendary guns . . .

Dwellings

Shock, terror, and wry humor pepper every page of Emmy Award-winning, Eisner Award-nominated cartoonist and animator Jay Stephens’s Dwellings. Welcome to Elwich—an oasis of small-town perfection, where the schools overflow with cheery-eyed children, lovingly adorned homes line the historic boulevards . . . and only the crows can see the deep, festering rot that lurks beneath the pristine surface. Murder. Demonology. Possession. Obsession. Elwich has them all on offer—and behind every dwelling awaits a horrifying new story to be told.

Gleem

A boy becomes bored at church with his grandmother until he tries a psychedelic drug. A group of friends are told that they need a rare battery if they want any chance of reviving their friend. Street style and cybernetics meet and burst into riotous dancing. Kindness and violence might not be as distant from each other as we think. GLEEM unsettles with a confidence that could make you believe in anything.

What did I miss?

If there are some great comics, collected or in single issues, that you think I should be reading, tell me about them! And if you do try out any of these series, let me know how you liked them, or didn’t. This is a safe space for haters.

If you like the writing I do, thank you! Check out my back catalogue and consider giving me a tip. It will help cover the website costs and also help me buy more comics to write about. You can also buy copies of Divining Comics # 1 print and digital, Divining Comics # 2 print and digital, and Divining Comics # 3 print and digital. The digital versions includes over 75 pages of FREE readable and printable pdfs, so you can print copies yourself and share with all of your friends.
